Study highlights eye risks linked to Nerf gun injuries
Nerf guns can cause significant but typically reversible eye injuries, most commonly traumatic anterior uveitis, according to a study.
Researchers from the Illinois College of Optometry reviewed patient records and identified 35 cases of Nerf gun-related eye trauma. The average patient age was 24, with injuries ranging from ages 3 to 56. None of the individuals were wearing eye protection at the time of injury, and all injuries involved only 1 eye.
Most cases (60%) involved traumatic anterior uveitis, treated successfully with topical steroids. Initial visual acuity ranged from 6/6 to 6/45, but all patients eventually recovered full vision (6/6). No damage was found in the back of the eye.
The findings highlight the importance of safety measures, including eyewear and proper supervision, especially during play involving foam dart projectiles.
